Glen Hansard (1970–2026)

The Troubadour of Dublin: Remembering Glen Hansard (1970–2026)

A celebration of his life, his art, from busking on Grafton Street to Oscar glory, and an enduring musical legacy.

Few artists embody the soul, grit, and romantic vulnerability of Irish music quite like Glen Hansard. From his teenage days singing with an open guitar case on Grafton Street to winning an Academy Award and headlining the world's most revered stages, Hansard remained a pure troubadour at heart. His tragic passing in July 2026 left a profound void across the music world, yet his songs of resilience, heartache, and communal hope continue to resonate deeply.

The Journey of a True Songwriter

Early Roots & The Commitments (1970–1991)

Born in Ballymun, North Dublin, Hansard left school at age 13 to pursue music full-time on the streets. Grafton Street became his proving ground, instilling in him the fierce, commanding vocal projection that would define his entire career. In 1991, he reached international recognition playing Outspan Foster, the earnest guitarist in Alan Parker’s cult film classic The Commitments. Though Hollywood came calling, Hansard retreated from mainstream celebrity to build something rooted and authentic: his own rock band.

The Frames: The Beating Heart of Irish Rock (1990–2006)

Formed in 1990, The Frames became one of Ireland’s most revered live acts. Over groundbreaking albums like Fitzcarraldo (1995), For the Birds (2001), and Burn the Maps (2004), the band built a fiercely loyal following. Driven by violin, surging guitars, and Glen’s raw, dynamic vocal style, tracks like "Revelate", "Star Star", and "Seven Day Mile" became anthems of Irish alternative rock.

Once, The Swell Season & Oscar Triumph (2006–2011)

In 2006, Glen collaborated with Czech pianist and singer Markéta Irglová on a quiet project titled The Swell Season. Former Frames bassist John Carney then cast them in his low-budget indie film Once (2007). The film became a global sensation, grossing millions and earning Hansard and Irglová the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" in 2008. Their on-screen chemistry translated into real-life reverence and musical partnership, later inspiring the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical adaptation.

Solo Era & Activism (2012–2026)

Launching his solo career with Rhythm and Repose (2012), Hansard embraced rich folk, soul, and orchestral textures. His 2015 record Didn't He Ramble earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, followed by the atmospheric This Wild Willing (2019) and the rock-infused All That Was East Is West of Me Now (2023).

Outside the studio, Hansard remained deeply dedicated to social causes. Every Christmas Eve, he orchestrated the legendary Christmas Eve Busk on Dublin's streets, gathering Ireland's finest musicians (including Bono, Damien Dempsey, and Imelda May) to raise funds for homelessness charities.

Tragic Passing & Worldwide Tributes

On July 29, 2026, Glen Hansard tragically passed away at age 56 following a motorcycle accident on the outskirts of Dublin. Tributes poured in from around the globe—from peers like Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, and Bono, to countless buskers and fans who were touched by his boundless warmth, fierce humility, and unmatched artistry.

Rooney - Kids After Sunset (The Lost Album): Interview with Taylor Locke & Ned Brower (Bandmates from Rooney)

Bandmates Taylor Locke and Ned Brower took the time to talk about a special chapter in the history of Rooney : the "lost" second album, Kids After Sunset ! I reached out to both of them separately and asked if they could answer a few questions - check it out below. Over the past 20 years, aplenty songs from this album surfaced online and were shared through blogs, fans, and social media. These were mostly demos or low-quality recordings, but in 2024, a seemingly final version of the album appeared on the internet! Kids After Sunset - cover art concept PPS:   Around 2004, Rooney recorded a significant number of songs for their intended second album,  Kids After Sunset - at least twenty-five tracks, as far as I know. The plan was for most of these songs to be included on the album. However, it is said that the record label rejected nearly all of them, claiming they didn’t like any of the tracks, and instructed the band to start from scratch with a completely new album. I...

Jason Falkner - Biography & Discography

There is this kind of musician who is writing, releasing records and performing his own music for more than two decades - but misses the aim that is chart success? The one who creates stunning music and don't get any recognition by public, but by his loyal fans? One of them is Jason Falkner . To sum it up: he may be one of the most underrated musicians of the last two decades. What a pity! Falkner started his musical career with a band called The Three O'Clock but soon he joined a new band of his former bandmate (Roger Joseph Manning Jr.) - Jellyfish . After the success of the first record ( Bellybutton ) he left the band and said he'll be never again a band member again (where he was clearly wrong). His solo career started in 1996 with Presents Author Unknown , followed with the fabulous Can You Still Feel? . I recommend to listen to Can You Still Feel? from start to finish - there's no filler song, no low point. 2001 was a good year for loyal fan...

CD Review: Ned Brower - Great To Say Hello

"Are you high Ned? Drummers don't make solo records. Next you're going to tell me you've actually gone and written some songs. Say it isn't so." It is - Ned Brower , the drummer of Rooney has a solo album called " Great To Say Hello " out for some weeks. The songs were produced by no other than Mike Viola and recorded in just 10 days. Ned says, the album "has been in my mental works for a couple of years". It's a mix of styles, yet it fits in the end. Ned: "I think we made a record that blends my northwest indie roots, my southern R&B leanings, and my Californian pop sensibility into an eclectic yet cohesive album. " Here are some short notes to some standout tracks: " Underneath You Spell " is a great upbeat opener, " Love And Affection #3 " has powerpop written all over it and " Hide Your Secrets Away " immediately got stuck in my head. " Mine And Mine Alone " is just groovy...
